Málaga
is laughing
A quiet revolution in Spanish-language stand-up is happening in Málaga, from the El Palo neighbourhood to the city centre
How Málaga became the new capital of Spanish-language stand-up with hardly anyone noticing
Four years ago there was barely anywhere in Málaga to get on stage and tell your stories. If you wanted to do stand-up in Spanish, you went to Seville or Granada. Today, that's changed. And it has a name: La Estoa Comedia.
It started at the La Llave Cultural Centre in El Palo and now has a show every Friday at Noma Backstage Club, next to the Teatro Cervantes: a comedy room on the boil, with comedians from four continents, a free open mic and an energy that's already turning heads beyond the city.
From London to Málaga: the man who decided to create what didn't exist
Rod Díaz was living in London when the pandemic hit. And in London, stand-up is something else. Any night of the week you can walk into a pub and watch someone telling their stories on stage. People laugh, have a drink, go home happy. Over there, it's a cultural fabric that feels completely normal.
When Rod came back to Málaga, he looked for the same thing. And he couldn't find it. There was nowhere people could get up, say their piece and learn by doing. So he built it himself. With what he had, from scratch, with no public funding and no venue of his own.
"When I came back from London there was no place like this in Málaga. Instead of waiting for someone else to create it, I created it myself."
— Rod Díaz, founder of La Estoa ComediaFour years on, more than 40 people have dared to pick up a mic at La Estoa's shows. Many are still active. Some have already gone on to perform outside Málaga. And the scene, which started with four friends and lots of enthusiasm, is starting to carry real weight.
Málaga is taking on Seville and Granada. And it means it.
For years, if you talked about Spanish-language stand-up in Andalusia, the conversation drifted towards Seville or Granada. Cities with more mature scenes, more venues, more history. Málaga was a blind spot on the comedy map.
That's changing. La Estoa comedians such as Juanma y Alberto Arrabal have already taken part in comedy competitions in Valencia and Seville. Not as spectators, but competing. Fran Sánchez, Stasya y Alberto Arrabal have been invited to perform in shows by well-known names on the national circuit: Jorge Yorya, Adri Romeo, Miguel Campos Galán, Xavi Daura and Eden Serrano.
La Estoa is no longer just a neighbourhood open mic. It's a breeding ground for talent that exports comedians and draws visitors from elsewhere. Guests from Uruguay and Argentina have graced its stages. The map is getting bigger.

A multicultural group where anyone can get on stage
Take any La Estoa poster and it already tells you a lot: there are comedians from Uruguay, Argentina, Russia and Málaga sharing the same mic. There are people in their twenties and people in their fifties. There are those who've been performing since day one and those getting up for the very first time.
That's no accident. La Estoa was born from the idea that stand-up shouldn't be a club for insiders. You don't need to be a professional comedian, have experience or even have a perfectly rehearsed set. All you need is the will to do it.
"More than 40 people have dared to get up. Many of them had never spoken in front of an audience. Today they're still performing."
— La Estoa Comedia, MálagaThe group works as a community: people come to watch, get the urge to take part, come back, bring friends. Some come to get over stage fright, some come to practise public speaking for work, and some simply want to meet new people in a city that can sometimes be hard to break into.
Fancy getting up?
The stage is free. So is the mic. And the open mic costs nothing.
